“Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” combines electrobeat, reggaeton and folklore. After a personally difficult time for the Colombian, Shakira’s first album in seven years represents a new beginning.

Miami.

The time for mourning is over. After separating from her long-time partner Gerard Piqué, a tax trial in Spain and moving to Miami, Latin world star Shakira is back with her first album in seven years. “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (The Women Don’t Cry Anymore) combines electrobeat, reggaeton, ballads and Mexican country music. “I turned the tears into diamonds,” says the 47-year-old Colombian. “I took my experiences in life, processed them and turned them into creativity.”

A pack of she-wolves accompanied her

In fact, Shakira has managed to create an extremely diverse album across the 16 Spanish-language songs. It ranges from the bachata piece “Monotonía” with the Puerto Rican singer Ozuna to the melancholic piano ballad “Ultima” and the rock song “Como, donde y cuando” to “Entre Paréntesis” with the US band Grupo Frontera in the style of Mexican folklore.

The album will be released on vinyl on Friday in four different versions, the design and coloring of which are based on gemstones: the diamond is said to stand for strength, the ruby for passion, the emerald for trust and the sapphire for vulnerability.

“The production of this work was an alchemical process,” Shakira writes on Instagram. “By writing each song, I was rebuilding myself.” Your fans would have played a big part in this. “I did not do this alone, but with all of you, with my pride of lionesses who have accompanied me every step of the way.”

The last few times haven’t been easy for Shakira

With over 100 million albums sold, streaming records and an estimated net worth of $300 million, Shakira is the most successful Latin musician in history. But the artist recently went through a difficult time. In 2022, after twelve years of relationship, she separated from the former Spanish national soccer player Piqué, the father of her two children. Shortly afterwards, the former FC Barcelona central defender appeared in public with his new girlfriend.

The musician had a lot to process. Last year she released several songs that were interpreted as settling accounts with her ex. “You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo, a Rolex for a Casio,” she sang in “Music Sessions #53.” The song, which she recorded together with the Argentinian music producer Bizarrap, became a global success.

A little later, her song “TQG” with the Colombian reggaeton singer Karol G was again interpreted as a swipe at the former soccer star. In the music video for “El jefe” she has the couple’s former nanny appear, who is said to have been thrown out by her ex-partner’s family after the separation.

At times it seemed as if Shakira had become stubborn, as if there was no longer any topic in her music other than her broken family. Above all, many wondered what her mother’s song-based reckoning felt like for their sons Milan and Sasha. “You know that you can only live your life if you accept the pain,” Shakira said in an interview with the British newspaper The Times. “And everyone has their own way of doing it.”

She wants to look forward

But with her new album she apparently wants to draw a line in the sand. In the melancholic ballad “Ultima” (Last), she perhaps turns to her ex again. “In time you’ll definitely regret it and one day you’ll want to knock on my door again, but you’ve decided to be alone. Try “Don’t try to persuade me, it’s decided,” says the song to gentle piano music.

It is the final song that Shakira completed for the album and is intended to herald a new phase in the versatile artist’s career. “Hopefully it’s the last song I write about him – and to him,” she told The Times newspaper. “I felt like there was something stuck in my throat that needed to come out.” (dpa)
