“North Korea fired an unspecified ballistic missile toward the East Sea,” South Korea’s military said in a statement.
The missile was launched on Monday at the same time as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visited Seoul to hold talks with some of his prime ministers.
This missile test by Pyongyang is the first of the new year, and comes after the last test in November, when North Korea launched a more advanced and powerful solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile .
In response, South Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea in a show of force.
South Korea was plunged into political crisis weeks ago after its President, Yoon Suk Sol, attempted to impose martial law on December 3, before being subsequently isolated and an arrest warrant issued against him.
North Korean state media described the South as a state of “chaos” and political paralysis as investigators tried to execute the arrest warrant against Yoon.
