Mumbai: Baramati Lok Sabha seat is in the headlines after the split in the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra. There is talk of a family fight between the Pawar family on this seat in 2024. Sharad Pawar has also announced the candidature of daughter Supriya Sule, but the situation is not clear from the Mahayuti side yet. There is discussion in political circles that BJP may reverse the move played by Sharad Pawar in Baramati. Till now there was speculation about the candidature of his wife Sunetra Pawar from Ajit Pawar-led NCP, but now it is discussed that Rashtriya Samaj Party (RSP) President Mahadev Jankar can be the candidate from Baramati on behalf of Mahayuti. If this happens, Pawar’s own move may backfire. To ensure the victory of daughter Supriya in Baramati, Sharad Pawar had offered RSP chief Mahadev Jankar to leave Mahayuti and join Mahavikas Aghadi.

Mahadev Jankar was offered the Madha Lok Sabha seat by Pawar, but Mahadev Jankar did not respond to Pawar’s offer, but after this offer his demand increased in Mahayuti. Now there is discussion that if Mahadev becomes a candidate from Baramati then no one should be surprised. BJP has declared 23 candidates in the state. Six to seven candidates can be declared from the party. Shinde-led Shiv Sena is expected to get 12 to 13 seats and Ajit Pawar is expected to get six to seven seats. The party has decided to give one seat to MNS and one seat to RSP, in such a situation the speculations have increased as to what Mahadev will do after knowing this? Will he accept Pawar’s offer or in a last-minute twist will he prefer to become Mahayuti’s candidate from Baramati? Supriya Sule defeated BJP in the elections in 2019. In 2014, he faced Rashtriya Samaj Paksha chief Mahadev Jagannath Jankar. He got 4,51,843 votes in that election. Supriya Sule could win by only 69,719 votes, whereas in the 2019 elections she had won by 1,55,774 lakh votes.

Politics heated up in Baramati
The possibility of Mahesh Jankar contesting from Baramati seat has heated up politics in the Pawar family stronghold. A camp in the Pawar family believes that there should be a family fight in Baramati. The logic behind this is that whoever wins, the Pawar family will retain the seat. Baramati seat has been with the Pawar family since 1984. Along with Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule have been elected MPs on this seat. Uneasiness has increased in Baramati due to Ajit Pawar faction not yet declaring the candidature of Sunetra Pawar. In such a situation, politics has become more heated when the name of Mahadev Jankar has surfaced. If Mahadev Jankar becomes the candidate of Mahayuti, then Ajit Pawar will have to use strength to defeat Supriya Sule and make Jankar win.

Knowing who is Mahadev?
Mahadev Jankar comes from Satara district of Maharashtra. He was born in a small village in a poor farmer and shepherd family. Jankar has obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from Sangli. Jankar started his political career by joining the Bahujan Samaj Party under the leadership of Kanshi Ram. After this he became the head of Yashwant Sena, but being a cultural organization, Yashwant Sena had some limitations in achieving its political goals. In 2003 he founded the political party Rashtriya Samaj Paksha. Contested from Madha Lok Sabha seat in 2009 elections. He finished third behind Sharad Pawar and BJP’s Subhash Deshmukh. He also contested the Lok Sabha seat from Baramati in 2014. Where he stood second after Supriya Sule. Jankar was elected member of the Legislative Council on 23 January 2015. He was made the Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Department of Maharashtra State in July 2016. Now he is in the BJP-led Mahayuti. Jankar is considered a big leader of the Dhangar community in Maharashtra.
