Serie A is about to adopt a new method to find the title winners. Serie A has come up with a new method to find the title winners if multiple teams finish the season with the same points in the league.
Unlike other leagues, Serie A will now play a play-off match between the teams if the points are equal.
Usually in other leagues in Europe, the winners are decided based on goal difference and head to head where the two teams at the top of the points table have the same points.
The same method was adopted in the previous season in Serie A as well. But the Italian Football Federation FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio) has decided to choose the winners in a new way.
Serie A’s new style of playoff matches will last only 90 minutes. Its specialty is that there is no extra time.
If the tie continues after ninety minutes, the winners will be decided by a direct penalty shoot-out.
Meanwhile, the new rule will only apply to the teams that are at the top of the points table. If the other teams are equal on points, then the top team will be decided on a head-to-head basis.
Before this, Serie A’s winners were decided once in the playoffs. In the 1964 match between Inter Milan and Bologna, this type of play-off was implemented. Bologna won the title by defeating Milan 2-0 in the match.
