Nuclear Energy Law will allow for sustainable electricity supply

The creation of the Nuclear Energy Law seeks to regulate all activities related to the life cycle of nuclear fuel, as part of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, which will contribute to the scientific, economic and social advancement of the country. This regulation was approved yesterday by the Legislative Assembly.

The implementation of nuclear energy in El Salvador will bring significant benefits such as guaranteeing a sustainable electricity supply, stabilizing the consumption price for the population, reducing dependence on limited energy sources vulnerable to climate changes, promoting technological development, energy security and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, aligning El Salvador with international sustainability standards and allowing long-term economic development.

The deputy of Nuevas Ideas, Mauricio Ortiz, highlighted that this issue is important, under the vision of President Nayib Bukele, since he currently seeks the economic development of the country and the introduction of clean energies. He added that El Salvador has renewable resources such as geothermal energy, but there are limitations in territorial capacity, so more hydraulic plants cannot be installed.

One of the benefits of this regulation, according to the legislator, is the stability in energy prices, “because it does not depend on rain or oil and that is what the State wants to transfer, those low prices to the final consumer.”

Likewise, the implementation of nuclear energy will allow human and academic development. So far, more than 25 people have been trained in order to make electricity generation, research and development plants, but in seven years, the aim is to train 400 and have the first research reactor.

The deputies clarified that no type of use will be made that is not peaceful and that the material will be used only for the generation of electrical energy and future research. Nuclear energy is the most regulated and supervised of all in the world, which is why the regulations were developed with the assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
