American processor maker Nvidia plans to release three new artificial intelligence chips for China. reported Chinastarmarket agency citing sources.
Nvidia may announce products on November 16th. The chips, according to sources, will be called HGX H20, L20 PCIe and L2 PCIe.
In October, the US Commerce Department announced plans to limit the sale of cutting-edge AI chips to China. New export measures will affect Nvidia A800 and H800 chips, Bloomberg clarified.
According to the American authorities, the restrictions will close loopholes that appeared after last year’s rules on the export of AI chips came into force. In addition, the ban may also affect chips from Intel and AMD, as well as semiconductor production equipment from Applied Materials, Lam and KLA.
Sergei Vakhrameev, head of international stock market analysis at the Sinara investment bank, told Vedomosti that China accounts for about 20–25% of Nvidia’s revenue in the largest segment of data processing centers (DPCs), where the company’s AI chips are used.
The expert noted that after the introduction of restrictions on the export of chips, Nvidia risks losing about $2.7 billion, which is approximately 6% of the company’s projected revenue in the 2024 financial year.
