World Migratory Bird Day (Word Migratory Bird Day) is celebrated twice a year: on the second Saturday in May (11 May 2024) and the second Saturday in October (October 12, 2024). The initiative belongs to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and aims to inform and raise awareness among the global community regarding the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.
Twice a year, in spring and fall, billions of birds migrate great distances across the globe. Migratory birds use three main routes: the African-Eurasian, the East Asian-Australian and the American. The leader of these movements is the snowy tern (Stern Sterna Paradisaea), a truly unique species that migrates from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again every year.
The Bird Festival is the peak of autumn migration, with millions of migrating birds making their way to wintering grounds in the Mediterranean and Africa. Greece is at an important migration crossroads and for that reason the events focus on the need to protect migratory birds, their migration routes and the habitats where they stop to feed and rest, so that the long journey continues and difficult to winter areas.
