Saints Sergius and Bacchus
According to saint.gr, Saints Sergius and Bacchus served in the military ranks of Emperor Maximian. They were distinguished on the battlefields by great bravery, but also by wisdom in their daily lives. For this reason, the emperor awarded them the positions of Kentilian and secundukerio, respectively.
When he found out that his two elite soldiers were Christians, he did not want to believe at all. To convince him, he organized ceremonies with sacrifices in a pagan temple and invited Sergius and Bacchus to attend. The two Christian soldiers rejected and confessed Christ with a courageous attitude. Angry at that time, the emperor ordered and the honors of their offices were removed from them. Then, after being treacherous and treacherous in various ways, they sent them to a cruel duke of the East, Antiochus. He put Bacchus to death with unprecedented cruelty. As for Sergius, because he had once done him any good, he proposed, after denying Christ, that his life should be spared. The brave answer of Sergius was the words of the Apostle Paul “I live Christ and died” (to the Philippians, verse 21). For me, said Sergius, Christ is life. But even dying is a gain, because in this way I will be completely united with Christ. Antiochus immediately gave the order and expelled him.
In 547 AD the Emperor Justinian erected a magnificent temple in Constantinople in honor of the Holy Martyrs Sergius and Bacchus, called “Hagia Little Sophia”, where he deposited their Holy relics.
In the West, many cities claim the Relics of the Martyrs, the first of which is in Venice, where relics given to them are kept in the Church of Agios Petros in Kastello. These remains were identified in 1991 AD.
In Pavia, in the Benedictine Monastery of Agios Filikos, the remains of the two Martyrs are kept, donated by the Emperor Otto II. These remains are included in the heirlooms that his Byzantine wife Princess Theofano brought with her to the West and for this reason there is no doubt about their authenticity.
According to another tradition, in the year 1152 AD, during the Crusades, Count Joseph of Andegavos carried the Relics of the Martyrs from Syria to his lands.
The remains of the two Martyrs are even kept in St. Martin’s Church in Heiligenstadt, as evidenced by the seal of Pope Paul II, dated 1469 AD. According to the Vollandists, these relics were transported in the 13th or 14th century AD. from Syria.
The remains of the Martyrs are even kept in the Wiessenburg Monastery in Bohemia, from a place in the year 1354 AD. Emperor Charles IV donated some of them to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
