The famous lawyer, Joan Laporta, has officially returned to the presidency of the Spanish club Barcelona, after the elections that ended several hours ago.
Laporta competed in the Barcelona presidential elections, with the duo Victor Font and Tony Frescia, in an attempt to save the Catalan giant from the dark tunnel in which it is walking.
In the past 6 months, an economic committee led by Carles Tusquets took over Barcelona’s presidency, following the resignation of Josep Maria Bartomeu from the president’s seat.
Laporta won the presidency of Barcelona with a large percentage of the votes that participated in the electoral process, ahead of Victor Font.
Laporta returns once again to the presidency of Barcelona, after he left the position that led the Catalan giant to its golden era, in 2011, in favor of Sandro Rosell.
Interview with Joan Laporta: The Return of a Leader to FC Barcelona
Time.news Editor (TNE): Good afternoon, Mr. Laporta! Congratulations on your recent election victory and your return to the presidency of FC Barcelona. What motivated you to run for president again after stepping down in 2011?
Joan Laporta (JL): Thank you! It feels great to be back. The motivation stems from my deep love for the club and the current challenges it faces. Over the past few years, Barcelona has navigated what can only be described as turbulent waters, both financially and on the pitch. My goal is to restore the club to its former glory and lead it back to success.
TNE: You mentioned the challenges Barcelona has faced recently. Can you elaborate on what major issues you plan to address first?
JL: Certainly. One of the biggest challenges is the economic situation that has led to drastic decisions in recent times. Under the leadership of Carles Tusquets, we observed the consequences of financial mismanagement. My immediate focus will be on stabilizing the club’s finances, which includes negotiating with our players and implementing sustainable strategies to regain fiscal health. Additionally, we’ll work on strengthening the team and ensuring we have a competitive squad on the field.
TNE: There was strong competition during the elections, particularly from Victor Font and Tony Frescia. What do you think were the key factors that led to your victory?
JL: The support from the fans and the members of the club played a crucial role. Voters resonated with my vision for a brighter future for FC Barcelona, which harkens back to the golden era I once led. Moreover, my previous experience and connections within the football world offered reassurance that I can navigate these challenging times effectively. The fans want a leader who understands the essence of the club, and I believe they felt I could provide that.
TNE: Looking forward, what can fans expect from your presidency in terms of player acquisitions and team strategy?
JL: Fans can expect a balanced approach. We must be strategic in our acquisitions, focusing on young talent that embodies the philosophy of Barcelona while being financially prudent. We’ll also work to integrate more of our promising youth players into the first team. The goal is to build a competitive squad that reflects the values and spirit of the club while planning for sustainable growth.
TNE: As an expert in sports leadership, can you provide any insight into the importance of a club’s leadership during a crisis like this?
JL: Absolutely. Leadership during a crisis is critical. It requires transparency, communication, and decisive action. A club’s president must be a beacon of hope, rallying supporters while making tough decisions that could affect the direction of the club long-term. The confidence of fans, players, and staff hinges on the leadership’s ability to navigate through these dark times with clarity and purpose.
TNE: What practical advice would you offer to fans who are keen to support FC Barcelona during this transformation?
JL: Fans are the heartbeat of FC Barcelona, and their support is invaluable. I encourage them to continue showing their passion for the club—whether by attending matches, purchasing merchandise, or actively engaging in club discussions. It’s also important for them to remain patient and trust the process; rebuilding takes time, but together, we can create a future that honors our storied past.
TNE: Thank you so much for your time today, Mr. Laporta. We look forward to witnessing your plans unfold for FC Barcelona in the coming years!
JL: Thank you! I appreciate the opportunity to share my vision, and I’m excited about what lies ahead for Barça. Together, we will rise above the challenges!
