Las Vegas Police Chief Kevin McMahill said during a press conference, “One person is dead inside the Cybertruck,” along with seven others suffering from “minor injuries.”
For his part, the owner of the electric car company Tesla, Elon Musk, announced in a post on “X”, the social media platform he also owns, that the reason for this explosion, “we did not see never before,” was the fire or explosives that were inside the car.
Musk wrote in his post that the explosion was caused by a large firework or bomb placed in the trunk of a Cybertruck rental truck, pointing out that the explosion had nothing to do with the vehicle itself.
The owner of Tesla explained that this result was reached through an investigation by senior officials in the company.
For his part, the police announced that they are still investigating to determine what caused the explosion.
According to the police chief, the electric car stopped at the glass gate of the Trump International Hotel, after which a “big explosion” took place.
Video footage showed the stainless steel truck parked at the entrance of the hotel before it caught fire, followed by a series of small explosions similar to the ignition of fireworks.
Musk, who was appointed by Trump to head a committee tasked with reducing federal government spending, confirmed that he would release more information on the matter as soon as it became available.
In Washington, the White House announced that President Joe Biden had been informed of the explosion and had ordered his staff to provide any federal assistance when needed.
Biden was previously briefed on the attack by a gunman who drove his truck into a crowd of New Year’s Eve revelers in the city of New Orleans, killing several, running over them before taking off and shooting others in the attack. which killed at least 10 people, and the authorities suspect that it was an act of “terror”.
In his press conference, the Las Vegas Police Chief made reference to the New Orleans attack, but did not specifically connect the two incidents, saying that authorities in Las Vegas are “taking every precaution we need to keep our community safe.”
