The latest version of our online editors is now available with multiple improvements throughout the suite. Keep reading to discover all the news.

Fillable PDF Forms

In version 8.0, you can create complex PDF forms and fill them out online, in desktop and mobile apps.

To create fillable PDF forms, use DOCXF templates. This file format allows you to insert various types of fields and adjust them so that your form looks the way you need. Just like a regular document, you can work with text using any style and format, as well as collaborate on forms with your team.

In previous versions, we used our own OFORM format to save and distribute ready-made forms. Starting with v8.0, we moved to PDF as the industry standard, taking advantage of all the benefits of our native format.

We have taken into account the requests and suggestions of our users and we have improved our forms:

  • to make it comfortable for you to work with professional forms created in ONLYOFFICE through other applications;
  • so you can fill out forms created in other applications using ONLYOFFICE;
  • to facilitate the integration process of ONLYOFFICE editors, including forms, for developers and integrators.

All forms previously created in ONLYOFFICE will be automatically converted to PDF the first time you open them in version 8.0.

What’s new for the form creator and filler

Additionally, to make the process of creating and filling out forms even more comfortable, in version 8.0 we have added:

  • Tips for working with DOCXF files;
  • Settings choosing the radio button for the corresponding field type;
  • Date picker for PDF forms containing the date format.

Next steps

In upcoming updates, we are planning to further improve ONLYOFFICE forms by adding more useful improvements such as new fields, role-based form filling, field navigation, signatures, etc. Stay tuned!

Bidirectional text and RTL interface

We continue working on the implementation of RTL. In version 8.0 we added support for bidirectional text in documents and presentations. This means that RTL text input is partially available (although with some limitations). It won’t be enough for full work with RTL-based scripts, but it’s a big step forward.

Additionally, you can activate the RTL interface in beta mode and test how it will work for you.

Next steps

In future releases, we plan to further refine RTL support, adding automatic detection of correct alignment for different types of text, entering RTL-style data into spreadsheets, and more.

Accessibility: improved screen readers

Starting with version 7.5, online and desktop editors offer the ability to use screen readers to convey information when working with text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. It makes the work process easier for blind users or users with vision problems.

The feature was available in beta mode. In response to user feedback, we’ve made some improvements, including the ability to use tab for buttons Accept/Cancel in the interface dialog boxes.

In addition, it is now possible to activate them easily through the interface settings. Activation via hotkeys is also possible.

News in spreadsheets

Find target. If you know the result you want from a formula, but you’re not sure what input value the formula needs to get that result, use the Find Target function.

Where to find: Data Tab -> Search Target

Chart Wizard. Displays a list of recommended chart types and a preview of all chart types based on the selected data.

Where to find: Insert Tab -> Recommended Chart

Series. Quickly create sequences of numbers using the Series function. In this way, you can mark an area of ​​cells and replicate the first one to all the others, as well as fill cells with series of values. This way, you can speed up your work when inserting large amounts of identical data.

Where to find: Home -> Fill -> Series

Additionally, in the spreadsheets we add:

  • Ability to get a link to the selected range when opening the file for viewing;
  • Expand/collapse field options in the context menu and in the toolbar of pivot tables;
  • Center option on the page (vertically/horizontally) for printing.

Collaborative Usability

For a better display of the team, we have implemented the possibility of adding user avatars to be displayed in the editors.

Additionally, in version 8.0 you will find a left panel optimized for working with comments in the document editor:

  • The button can now also be accessed add comment through the panel header;
  • The option add comment the document has been moved to the button Order and more.

News in presentations

When applying animations, you can now set the final color for color change effects.

New location options

In version 8.0, you will find:

  • Serbian and Arabic translation for editors;

Updated user interface for plugins

We have added the ability to use multiple visual plugins simultaneously: a separate button will be added in the left panel for each plugin used. In this way, you can translate texts, check grammar, create bibliographic lists, etc. at the same time, easily switching between multiple tasks.

Background or system plugins, which work in the background while the editors are running, are now accessible by clicking the corresponding button.

Additionally, we have added the Changelog tab for each plugin in the Plugin Manager so you can check what’s new with each new version of the plugin.

More speed and power

According to speed tests, file creation and opening actions in version 8.0 are performed faster compared to version 7.5.1:

  • Create empty files – up to 15%
  • Open normal files – up to 20%
  • Open large files – up to 15%

Furthermore, in collaboration with our partner ownCloud, we have carried out load tests, the results of which show that ONLYOFFICE Docs now supports 100,000 simultaneous connections.
