After establishing itself in London and Dublin, American start-up OpenAI, creator of the hugely popular artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT, will open an office in Paris, it announced on Wednesday. This presence should allow OpenAI “to access the French talent pool,” the company claims in a press release, adding that it will start recruiting soon.
“With a team in place, we will be able to collaborate closely with French companies, institutions and developers to help them fully exploit the benefits of artificial intelligence,” says Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI. The company also announces plans to open offices in Singapore, New York and Brussels later this year.
“This choice reflects the growing dynamism of our French artificial intelligence ecosystem, which we want to position as one of the world leaders,” welcomes the new Secretary of State for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs, Clara Chappaz, quoted in the press release .
The next AI summit in Paris
Paris will host the next international artificial intelligence summit in February 2025, with President Emmanuel Macron having a stated ambition to make France a major player in the sector. However, the arrival of OpenAI will take place in a context of stalemate with French newspapers.
In fact, the developer of ChatGPT refused in mid-September to enter into negotiations with two French press outlets to use the content of the 800 newspapers they represent for a fee.
The start-up, valued at $157 billion after a major fundraising of $6.6 billion last week, is also, like all AI giants, on Brussels’ radar. The European Union therefore continues to examine the partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI and its impacts on competition.
