The U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB) Secretariat is launching an investigation into Ippei Mizuhara, the interpreter for Shohei Ohtani (LA Dodgers).

The MLB Secretariat said in a statement on the 23rd (Korean time), “The Secretariat has been collecting information after learning of the suspicions of Otani and Mizuhara through the media. “Today, our investigation department began the formal investigation process into this matter.”

On the 21st, foreign media reported that Mizuhara was suspected of illegal gambling and theft. It is known that millions of dollars were stolen from Otani’s bank account for gambling, and the money missing from Otani’s account is said to amount to at least $4.5 million (about 6 billion won).

In the process, Mizuhara explained that Otani had sent money to pay off his gambling debts, but then changed his story to say that Otani had no idea about this. Otani’s lawyer said, “Ohtani was the victim of a large-scale theft,” and explained that she was not aware of Mizuhara’s gambling involvement.

According to local media, there is a possibility that Otani will be punished if he lent money to Mizuhara even after knowing that it was an illegal gambling debt. Sports betting is legal in about 40 states in the U.S., but it is illegal in California, home of the Dodgers.

Many people believe that Mizuhara’s sudden change of position is also related to this.

Ohtani is a superstar who has been loved by baseball fans for his outstanding skills and personality since his big league debut in 2018. However, he faced the worst scandal of his baseball career due to suspicions related to Mizuhara.

Otani and Mizuhara have a special relationship for 10 years. Otani met Mizuhara in 2013 while playing for the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). After completing the 2017 season, he signed with the LA Angels and hired Mizuhara as his personal interpreter when he entered the United States.

The Dodgers hired Mizuhara when they signed Otani for 10 years and $700 million at the end of December last year.

Mizuhara, who has always been by Ohtani’s side, also came to Korea with Ohtani for the MLB World Tour Seoul Series on the 15th.

However, after the illegal gambling and theft charges were revealed, the Dodgers immediately fired Mizuhara. Unlike the first game of the Seoul Series held at Gocheok Sky Dome on the 20th, Mizuhara did not appear in the second game held on the 21st.
