Former Treasurer Accused of Stealing $246,000 from Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association

A newly elected board of directors at the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA) uncovered a devastating financial breach: the organization’s bank account had been completely drained. This discovery led to criminal charges against Michal Fantuzzo, the association’s former treasurer, who is accused of misappropriating over $246,000 for personal use between 2021 and 2024.

Financial Crisis Unveiled in 2025

The financial irregularities came to light in 2025 when the new board members found themselves unable to meet the association’s financial obligations. A subsequent investigation revealed a series of “questionable withdrawals” from POTA’s accounts, prompting authorities to launch a full inquiry. The Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association, headquartered in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is dedicated to fostering professional growth and ensuring access to therapists who support individuals navigating physical changes, rehabilitation, and developmental challenges.

Extravagant Spending Allegations

According to police reports, 40-year-old Fantuzzo, of Westmoreland County, allegedly used the stolen funds to settle personal debts and maintain a lavish lifestyle. The alleged spending spree included a family vacation to Disney World, a rental property in North Carolina, a membership at a country club, limousine services, and the installation of a hot tub at his residence.

Investigators have noted a photograph on Fantuzzo’s Facebook profile depicting him with family members at Disney, but have not yet confirmed if it relates to the expenditures under investigation.

Arrest and Charges

Fantuzzo turned himself in to police on Friday and was subsequently released on the same day. He currently faces multiple felony charges related to the alleged theft. He did not respond to attempts to contact him on Monday.

POTA’s Response

The Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association declined to provide an interview but released a statement expressing deep concern. “It was deeply troubling to learn that Mr. Fantuzzo chose to abuse the trust we placed in him with respect to POTA’s financial accounts,” a statement from the association read.

Fantuzzo is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on February 17th.
