PAICV, in the opposition at the central level, has achieved a devastating victory in the local elections

by time news

The African Party for the Independence of ⁤Cape⁢ verde (PAICV), wich⁢ is‍ in opposition at the ‌national ‌level, won a resounding victory in the⁢ municipal elections this Sunday, December 1, winning 15 of the country’s 22 municipal councils.

Political observers also see the result as an across-the-board victory⁤ for the Government of Ulisses Correia e⁢ Silva, who participated with his ministers in the campaigns.

With 98.1 percent of the votes counted, the PAICV elected 80 councilors nationally, while the MPD had only 40 voting councillors.

PAICV won ⁤15 Municipal Chambers, and ‍elects 80 councillors.

In fact, ⁣in the second⁢ largest constituency, São Vicente, Augusto Neves (MpD) won with ⁢41.3%, ⁣followed by PAICV (26.4%) and UCID (24.6%). MPD elects 3 councillors, PAICV and UCID, 2 each.

Regarding municipal assemblies, the⁣ PAICV will be the ‌majority in 14 and the MPD, eight, and especially that on the Island of brava the PAICV and the municipal Assembly were won by the MPD.

It was in the capital, Praia, where the MpD bet ‌on a “heavyweight” the fight in which all the ⁣attention was focused and which would act, for political analysts, as a thermometer with a ‌view to the legislative ⁣elections of 2027, in which the Minister Cultures bet on “heavyweight”. and Industries Criativas and the Minister of the Sea, Abrão Vicente, to win again for PAICV in 2020.

Francisco Carvalho, the current mayor of Praia,⁣ won comfortably, with 61.1 percent of the votes, and, unlike in 2024, he will govern with a⁤ much larger margin of maneuver.

PAICV’s victory is so devastating that the party won Porto Novo, Maio and the Organs Association for the first time.

One of the ‌most ⁣critically important municipalities, Santa ⁢Catarina de Santiago is once again managed by PAICV.

Legislative elections will take place in ⁢the first half ⁢of ⁢2026 and the outcome of these municipal ⁢elections will have some influence on the process, although not necessarily the party that wins the decision.

Both parties in the arch of power will have internal elections to choose the leaders ⁤who⁣ will go to⁤ the legislature.

How might the shift in local governance affect the ⁣upcoming legislative elections in Cape Verde in 2026?

Interview: ⁢Analyzing the Recent municipal Elections in Cape Verde

Editor: Welcome, and thank you for joining us today. We’re here to discuss the recent municipal elections held in Cape Verde on December 1st, were the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) achieved a meaningful victory.⁤ Wiht me is Dr. Maria Gomes,a political analyst specializing in⁢ Cape Verdean politics. Dr. Gomes,‌ what are the key takeaways from the recent election results?

Dr.Gomes: Thank you for having me. The PAICV’s resounding victory, winning 15 out of 22 municipal councils, signifies a crucial shift in Cape Verde’s political landscape. They elected 80 councilors, markedly outpacing the ‌ruling ‌MpD party, which only secured 40. ‍This outcome indicates a growing public support for the PAICV ⁣ahead of the upcoming legislative elections in 2026.

Editor: This electoral shift is quite remarkable. What do you think accounted for ⁤this extensive support for PAICV?

Dr. Gomes: Several factors contributed to PAICV’s success. Firstly, there’s the past‌ context; the party has a strong legacy in‍ Cape Verdean politics. Additionally, the opposition’s effective campaigning resonated with the electorate, particularly in areas where citizens feel the need for change. ‍The party’s⁣ ability to present compelling candidates, such as Francisco Carvalho in Praia, also played a vital role. His notable win with 61.1 percent of the votes illustrates voters’ desire for stability ⁤and effective ‌governance.

Editor: Speaking of municipal governance, how do you think the political dynamics will shift with PAICV in control of ⁢the majority of ⁣municipal chambers?

Dr. Gomes: Having the majority in 14 out of 22 municipal assemblies gives the PAICV significant influence in shaping local‌ policies and governance. This newfound ⁣power will‍ enable them to implement their ⁣agenda more effectively and respond to the needs of⁤ their constituents. ⁣Though, it also ‍places pressure on the party⁣ to‌ deliver results and meet public expectations leading up to the 2026 legislative elections.

Editor: You mentioned ‍legislative elections are ⁣coming‌ up in 2026. How do ⁢you see the results of these municipal elections impacting those upcoming elections?

Dr. Gomes: The municipal election results will likely serve as‍ a barometer for public⁢ sentiment ahead of the legislative elections. If PAICV can successfully translate ‌this local momentum into a ‍broader national appeal, it could markedly shift the balance of power. At the same time, the ‍MpD will have to reassess its ⁢strategies; ‌their internal leadership elections will be⁣ critical as they prepare to appeal to voters who may now feel their needs are not being met.

Editor: From an analytical‍ standpoint, how should the MpD approach this situation to regain voter confidence?

Dr. gomes: The MpD should invest time in understanding the electorate’s concerns and⁤ adapt their policies accordingly. Engaging with local communities, listening to their challenges, and presenting clear, actionable solutions will be vital. It’s also critically important for them to present a united front in⁣ their internal elections to restore faith among their supporters.Voter engagement initiatives and transparent communication about their governance achievements can reshape their image before the next elections.
