Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas expressed condolences on the death of former US President Jimmy Carter.

According to the Time of Israel on the 30th (local time), Abbas praised former President Carter as “the first American leader to recognize the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.”

In a statement, President Abbas emphasized, “I made a bold speech against injustice, expressing my position on the reality of Israeli apartheid, and fought for peace amidst violence and war.”

He added, “President Carter’s legacy will forever remain in our hearts as a testament to his immeasurable contributions to justice and peace.”

Upon hearing the news of former President Carter’s death, leaders of various countries, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressed their deep condolences.

Pope Francis also prayed, saying, “Former President Carter lived a dedicated life for reconciliation and peace between ethnic groups, protection of human rights, and for the underprivileged.”

Former President Carter received the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his contribution to mediating the war in the Middle East.

He had an uneasy relationship with Israeli leaders during his time in office.

In a book titled “Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid,” published in 2006 after leaving office, former President Carter said that Israel oppresses the Palestinian people and compared the situation faced by Palestinians to apartheid.
