Pandemic improves the training of specialists in medical universities – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

A man, who looks about forty, in the prime of life, does not show signs of life. Seconds are allotted for a preliminary diagnosis and first aid. Pressure, pulse, ECG show a heart rhythm disorder … Two electrodes – on the chest, as shown in the movies, a shock!

And suddenly a disgruntled voice is heard: “Doctor, it hurts!” It turns out that modern simulators for doctors can not only pretend to be sick, but also talk.

Last year, the Medical Institute of Penza State University (PSU) received modern equipment for practicing first aid, including in obstetrics and cardiology. “Leonardo” – this is the name of the simulator depicting a man in full growth, has more than a hundred programs that simulate various critical conditions. It can work in both automatic and controlled modes. For example, it can be connected to a ventilator, and future doctors can practice this skill.

Despite the foreign name, “Leonardo” is ours, domestic. Thanks to him, medical students have the opportunity to work out help in the most severe cases as close to reality as possible: strokes, heart attacks, an epileptic seizure.

Future doctors were able to see the severe course of various chronic diseases that are exacerbated by the coronavirus.

– When studying university-wide disciplines, distance forms of work can be used. But there are clinical disciplines that can only be mastered at the patient’s bedside. This is a unique experience that cannot be learned while sitting at a textbook or a computer screen. Many students go to work as nurses at local clinics, including the “red” zone, ”says Alexander Mitroshin, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, director of the PSU Medical Institute.

Currently, about 600 students and residents are employed in Penza clinics. Another part of those wishing to work in call centers, help to make an appointment with a doctor or get vaccinated.

The pandemic also affected the recruitment of foreign students. For them, it has been extended until November 1. About a thousand foreigners from 40 countries of the world study in Penza. Last year, the PSU Medical Institute entered 15 Russian universities, whose graduates do not need nostrification of diplomas to work in Arab countries.

The enrollment in the medical institute has increased due to the increase in the enrollment targets – last year there were 30 budget places more, this year by 20 more. Most of them are distributed according to the target area. Today, 35 percent of the medical staff of Penza hospitals consists of graduates of the PSU medical institute.

New technologies and areas of study stimulate innovative developments of the Ural medical students. A demo version of a non-contact stethoscope, which can be used to examine a patient remotely, for example, in the “red” zone, was presented by students of the Ural State Medical University (USMU) at the Digital Solutions in Medicine hackathon. Specialists of the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant, one of the largest Russian enterprises for the production of medical equipment, appreciated the development of future doctors highly: the innovative project has prospects.

The active participation of students, starting from the first year, in research work is one of the trends of a new approach in the educational activities of USMU.

– Today, it is extremely important to integrate doctors with the scientific community, leading engineers and designers involved in medical equipment. Our students are well aware of the real needs of practical healthcare, – says the rector of USMU Olga Kovtun.

The university has a multi-profile accreditation and simulation center, where students practice their professional skills using the latest equipment: dummies, phantoms, including in virtual reality. Last year, the university became a part of the Ural interregional research and educational center of the world level (UMNOTS) “Advanced production technologies and materials”. Now more than 40 scientific schools and directions are developing on the basis of the university.

The coronavirus pandemic has made its own adjustments not only in the organization of the learning process – the active introduction of distance learning and digital technologies. In the Urals, there is a problem with a shortage of emergency doctors. The fleet of modern machines has been replenished, but there are not enough personnel for the formation of brigades. To solve the problem, from September 1, an internship for the training of ambulance doctors was opened at the USMU. The possibility of creating a base department for training specialists of dialysis centers, which are actively opening in the Urals, is also being considered.

Orientation on the provision of medical personnel to hospitals and clinics in the region is one of the leading directions of the development of the university. In the Sverdlovsk Region, for three years now, the target recruitment of students has been carried out not only under the federal, but also under the regional program “Governor’s Recruitment”. This year, 326 students of the medical and prophylactic and pediatric faculties completed targeted training and went to work in the districts. To reduce the staff shortage in the outback, the university is creating a network of basic schools, where specialized medical classes are opened for high school students. This summer, the project was launched in three schools of Nizhny Tagil at once.
