Speaker of the National Parliament. Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury said that parliamentary diplomacy has proven to be helpful in resolving complex issues through dialogue and peaceful discussion at bilateral, multilateral and regional levels. Parliamentary diplomacy should be used to establish global peace and security by ensuring inclusive development.

He said these things at the discussion meeting titled ‘Parliamentary Diplomacy: Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding’ at the 213rd session of the Governing Council organized on the occasion of the ‘148th IPU Assembly’ on Sunday (March 24) local time in Geneva, Switzerland.

‘Let parliamentary diplomacy help create a world free from poverty, hunger, war and human suffering. So that world peace and security can be established by building bridges for the welfare of humanity.’ Quoting the statement of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Speaker said, Bangabandhu’s cherished dream was to establish a society free from hunger, poverty and exploitation and parliamentary diplomacy can play a helpful role in this regard.

He said Parliament is the heart of democracy and represents the hopes and aspirations of the people. Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad engages with various international forums including IPU, CPA, PUIC and promotes parliamentary diplomacy through parliamentary alliance groups.

Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, as people’s representatives, parliamentarians have the unique ability to create a world where every citizen has equal opportunities to achieve their aspirations and no one is left behind. Parliamentarians around the world are responsible for bringing about positive change in people’s lives.

He also said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh National Parliament is working to create a just society free from poverty and exploitation, where economic, political and social justice will be equal for all. Parliaments must work together to ensure a life of human dignity for everyone.
