Polling stations opened in Uzbekistan in elections to the Legislative Chamber Oliy Majlis (parliament) of the country and to local kengashes (councils) of people’s deputies.
As Day.Az reports, this is stated in the address of the Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan Zainiddin Nizamkhodzhaev.
The CEC Chairman reported that 11,028 polling stations opened at 8:00 local time.
“Also, 57 polling stations at diplomatic and consular institutions of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 40 foreign countries began operating, including polling stations created in the countries of the East,” he said.
Nizamkhodjaev noted that in the current elections, 19 million 944 thousand 859 voters were registered in the electronic voter list of the automated electoral process management system. In addition, 165 thousand 631 voters are registered abroad.
According to him, this year’s elections are being held on the basis of a mixed electoral system based on the new Constitution and national electoral legislation.
“This system allows 75 deputies of the Legislative Chamber to be elected in single-mandate constituencies using a majoritarian electoral system, another 75 – using a proportional electoral system based on party lists,” he added.
