An authority from the Cuban Radiocommunication and Broadcasting company (RadioCuba) in Pinar del Río, reported that starting next Saturday, December 3, the partial transition to digital television will begin in Vueltabajo, when educational channels stop being transmitted analogically. .

As he explained to the newspaper Granma Luis Armenteros, head of the Territorial Division of RadioCuba in the province, initially Cubavisión, Tele Rebelde and Multivisión will remain available to those people who do not yet have decoder boxes or hybrid televisions.

For months there have been announcements about this technological transit that, according to the Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich, would begin in September 2022. Everything seems to indicate that it will finally begin at the Guanito television center, located 18 km north of the city of Pinar del Río, which provides services to about 300,000 people in the main municipality, San Juan y Martínez, San Luis, Consolación del Sur and part of Los Palacios, which represent more than 50% of the Pinar del Río population.

Armenteros specified that as this experience progresses, the remaining television transmission centers in the province will be included, although currently the digital signal covers around 74% of the territory.

He highlighted that the installation of new equipment, as part of the transition process to digital television, will increase the power and, therefore, the area reached by the signal.

Regarding the advantages of this process, Armenteros warned that it is a necessity, because it is increasingly difficult and expensive to keep the analog signal on the air, since practically no equipment or spare parts are manufactured.

«We have to insert ourselves, because that is the global trend. Transmission equipment that is not digital is no longer sold, and Cuba continues to drag analog equipment that has been in use for many years and that no longer provides any more.

However, the unknown is the number of people who will stop tuning into educational channels because they do not have hybrid televisions or decoder boxes.

In this sense, he specified that all schools have the necessary means to receive digital television and that decoder boxes were also previously delivered to all beneficiaries of social assistance.

The head of the Territorial Division of RadioCuba also said that Pinar del Río will be the pioneer province in this experience, which will be extended in stages to the rest of the country.
