The renewable energy agenda has gained momentum during the Year of Solidarity for a Green World and COP29.
As Day.Az reported on Friday, this was stated in the article by the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan Parviza Shahbazovapublished in the newspaper “Azerbaijan”.
According to him, in the coming years, the dynamics of electricity production and export will be formed largely on the basis of renewable energy sources.
There is rich potential for this, all the necessary conditions, such as government policy, a new legislative framework and cooperation with international investors, the priority of creating and transporting types of “green” energy to world markets. The implementation of plans to build and connect to the grid 8 industrial-scale solar and wind power plants with a capacity of about 2 GW by 2027 through foreign and local investments of about 2.8 billion US dollars shows that Azerbaijan is rapidly moving towards green energy, and this is an irreversible process. It is no coincidence that this point is also reflected in the World Economic Forum report “Advancing an Effective Energy Transition 2023”. The report said Azerbaijan rose to 32nd place among 120 countries with an Energy Transition Index of 62, thanks to its efforts to prepare for the transition by improving the regulatory environment and infrastructure, the article said.
It is noted that in June of this year, the Masdar company from the United Arab Emirates laid the foundation for three stations with an investment cost of about 1 billion US dollars with a total capacity of 1000 MW – in the Banka village in Neftchala for 315 MW, in Bilasuvar – for 445 MW and for 240 MW in Absheron-Garadag. A framework agreement was also signed with ACWA Power for 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and 200 MW onshore wind projects. As part of the project “Knowledge exchange and technical assistance in the development of a floating solar panel system”, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the first floating solar power plant was put into operation on Lake Boyukshor with a total capacity of 100 kW and the ability to produce 160,000 kWh of electricity per year . Azerbaijan has launched its first renewable energy auction process, with the auction results for the 100 MW Gobustan hydroelectric power plant project due to be announced during COP29. Another project, the implementation of which is being promoted within the framework of the COP, is the Shafag solar power plant with a capacity of 240 MW.
Currently, intensive work is underway on the construction of the Khizi-Absheron thermal power plant with a capacity of 240 MW, which will be put into operation next year. Components of 40 wind turbines have already been delivered to the region, which will be installed in the village of Pirekeshkul in the Absheron region and the village of Sitalchay in the Khizi region. The Nobel Energy company continues activities on projects for the construction of two solar power plants with a capacity of 100 MW in Jebrail, and the company China Gezhouba Group Overseas Investment – two solar power plants with a capacity of 160 MW in Fuzuli. By 2027, it will be possible to increase the share of “green” energy in electricity production capacity to 33 percent, the article says.
