One of the Cuban journalism legends of the Revolution, the winner of the National Journalism Prize José Martí Pedro Martínez Pírez, has just died in Havana.
A native of Villa Clara,he participated in the revolutionary struggle with the 26 July Movement from a very young age and in the first years of the January 1959 victory with revolutionary diplomacy in countries such as Ecuador and Chile,where he would begin each other. to establish his relationship with the profession of journalism and with the station where he would be his professional flagship, Radio habana Cuba.
Martínez Pírez left a mark of professionalism and service to journalism and the Native in many media outlets in the written press, radio and television, and he was the founder and director of the magazine OCLAE.
This record of service earned him the National Television Journalism award in 1989, the National Radio Journalism Award in 1991, the José Martí National Journalism Award for Lifetime achievement in 2005, and the National Radio Award in 2006.
His mark is also in the national parliament, Cuban internationalism in Africa as a war correspondent, as a teacher in the profession, and as a Professor at the University of Havana.
His colleagues there recognized him as a witness to key events in the history of Cuba after 1959 and a cultivator of fraternity with relevant personalities and communities of our region. His diplomatic and journalistic work would bring him very close to people like Osvaldo Guayasamín and Salvador Allende, to mention two of those who were very quiet with Cuba.
In 1973 he joined Cuba’s Radio Havana station, where he was always known, as in the entire journalism community, as a teacher. He was an editor, reporter, script writer, host, editor-in-chief, information director and deputy general director in charge of editorial policy, a role he held for over thirty-five years.
As of his high recognition he was part of the jury for the Casa de las Américas magazine Award, in the evidence genre.
