Penitentiary system participates in Monumental Alebrijes Parade 2024

For the first time in 16 editions, the prison system of Mexico City participated in the “Monumental Alebrijes Parade and Contest 2024”, organized annually by the Museum of Popular Art (MAP).

As part of the social reintegration strategies, inmates from Santa Martha Acatitla participated in the parade with the sculpture “Tlacuaxolata Libertad Turquoise”.

“The monumental alebrije It was created by 20 women deprived of their liberty that used recycled materials such as PET bottles and cardboard, which took three months of work, as a result of a cardboard workshop taught since September 2023,” reported the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC).

Likewise, he explained that the name of the work refers to the axolotl and the opossum, two emblematic species of Mexico that are found in danger of extinction.

For its part, the Reclusorio Oriente participated with the Alebrije “Dracoleon”a piece that fuses features of a dragon and a lion, made by 10 inmates of said prison.

Both alebrijes paraded from the Capital Zócalo, passed through 5 de Mayo and Juárez avenues, the Paseo de la Reforma until you reach the Angel of Independencea, accompanied by relatives of the inmates who made them.

The pieces participating in the 2024 Monumental Alebrijes Parade will remain on display on Paseo de la Reforma avenue, until next November 3.
