Discounter Penny now demands “true prices”

At the discounter Penny, Maasdam cheese is twice as expensive this week as usual: With a striking campaign, the retailer is demonstrating to its customers for some products how high the price would be if the consequences for the climate were taken into account.

The WDR also surveyed customers for a daily news report about “true prices” at the discounter Penny. A young woman welcomed the action. The problem: she works for WDR. This contradicts journalistic standards, the broadcaster apologized.

It’s about the action of the discounter Penny to sell several products more expensive for a few days in order to price in possible environmental damage. In a contribution to the “Tagesschau” and the “Tagesthemen”, West German Broadcasting (WDR) gave customers a chance to speak – including an employee of the station.

In the post, the supposed customer Hannah Mertens praised the campaign. Mertens, however, works at the radio station WDR 5. The viewers of Germany’s most-watched news program didn’t find that out. Twitter users noticed the faux pas on Wednesday.

The WDR regretted having interviewed its own employee as a customer without making this clear. The public broadcaster ARD announced on Wednesday: “Interviewing colleagues without making their affiliation transparent violates our journalistic standards. We regret this mistake, it was an accident.”

More about the discounter Penny

The broadcaster spoke of a misunderstanding and described the process as follows: “The employee had shopped in the supermarket after her early shift at WDR and was questioned there by the reporter about the discounter campaign. He didn’t know her.”

WDR also said: “There was a misunderstanding: the colleague said she had just come from WDR Radio. In this situation, the reporter understood that she had heard about this topic on WDR radio in a cut version in the ARD media library available – without Mertens.
