Peru and Chile have extended until next week warnings related to the dangers of the huge waves that hit their coasts at the end of last year, killing three people and causing damage in both countries as well with Ecuador..
In Peru, the Civil Defense said in a post on the X platform that it extended until Tuesday the recommendation to suspend port and fishing activities, as well as secure ships.
For its part, the Peruvian Navy said that “60 of the country’s 121 ports were closed due to low to medium height waves,” noting that “this measure will continue until next Tuesday.”
Peruvian authorities asked “residents during this summer vacation period in the Southern Hemisphere to avoid sports and recreational activities, as well as camping near the beaches, as long as this phenomenon continues.”
These exceptional waves form in the open ocean, thousands of kilometers from the coast, making them much more dangerous than the normal waves that form on the beaches as a result of local winds. from the border with Ecuador in the north to the border with Chile in the south..
