Following a serious accident, a traumatized patient must undergo complex microsurgical reconstruction, a precision procedure. Another consults for a facelift as part of facial rejuvenation. Yet another comes for a prosthesis, after a mastectomy linked to breast cancer. So many cases that Doctor Jean-Sébastien Barbier follows in a single day. The 27-year-old intern emphasizes the variety of his daily life at Saint-Louis hospital in Paris, in the plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery department: “There are many myths around this discipline, often reduced to its aesthetic aspect to point out its excesses, when it is much more than that. »

He himself only became passionate about plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery at the end of his third year of medicine, during a stay in Korea, as part of an exchange program allowing him to explore health systems in different countries around the world: “Koreans have a different acceptance of body modification, and the country has become one of the world capitals of plastic surgery”, he specifies. Back in Paris, he decided to make it his career. His father, a general practitioner, and his mother, a dentist, are surprised: “For them, a great surgeon is more cardiac or digestive. »

While he was a young extern, Jean-Sébastien Barbier worked between eighty and one hundred hours per week to prepare for the national ranking tests which determine the choice of sector and university hospital center (CHU) of assignment: “There were only seven places in plastic surgery in Paris, for 9,000 candidates. » He won the Holy Grail – an internship in plastic surgery at the Saint-Louis hospital – and the approval of his parents.

“A certain form of prestige”

“Plastic surgery is one of the most difficult specialties to get into. This makes it all the more attractive: accessing this specialty also means accessing a certain form of prestige”, summarizes Alexandre Kitic, 26 years old, intern and founder of the National Association of Young Visual Artists. The discipline has been among the specialties most requested by interns since 2017, according to data from the National Management Council of Hospital Practitioners, contacted by The world.

It even appears at the top in 2021 et 2022according to The Doctor’s Daily. The craze is confirmed in 2023 : plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery is the most popular specialty in proportion to open positions, 82% of plastic surgery positions were even filled on the first day of choice for the national procedure.
