PM Modi Urges Students to Embrace Reading, Caution Against Tech Over-Reliance

NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Modi underscored the enduring value of traditional learning methods, recalling how a simple daily exercise – reading and discussing sentences from The Times of India’s edit page – profoundly shaped his own intellectual development. Speaking at the second episode of the ninth edition of Pariksha Pe Charcha 2026, the Prime Minister shared personal anecdotes and practical advice with students from Coimbatore, Raipur, Guwahati, and Devmogra in Gujarat.
The annual event, launched in 2018, has become a significant platform for direct interaction between the Prime Minister and students across India, demonstrating sustained enthusiasm nationwide. This year’s edition focused on fostering a mindset of learning and resilience in the face of modern challenges.
The Power of Reflection and Discipline
“My teacher used to tell us daily, ‘Go to the library. In The Times of India, there is a sentence on the edit page – write that in your notebook and come,’” Modi recounted, highlighting the role of reading and reflection in building critical thinking skills. He emphasized that this practice instilled in him a sense of curiosity and discipline, qualities he believes are essential for success.
The Prime Minister urged students to prioritize habits that strengthen their cognitive abilities, rather than seeking shortcuts. He cautioned against an over-reliance on technology, observing that mobile phones have become “masters” for some children, with some unable to even enjoy a meal without being glued to a screen.
Navigating the Age of AI
Addressing the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), Modi advocated for a balanced approach. He advised students to utilize AI as a tool for guidance and enhancement, but not as a replacement for genuine learning. “AI should be used for guidance and value addition, not as a substitute for learning,” he stated.
He acknowledged that the nature of work is constantly evolving, drawing a parallel to the historical shift from carts to airplanes, and stressed the importance of adaptability.
Exam Preparation and Parental Guidance
Beyond academic strategies, the Prime Minister offered practical tips for exam preparation, emphasizing the importance of both diligent study and adequate rest. He encouraged students to practice with previous years’ papers and prioritize clear, focused writing.
He also addressed the role of parents, cautioning against fostering a competitive environment at home. “Constant comparison creates pressure rather than motivation,” he explained, advocating for a supportive and encouraging approach to learning.
Leadership and a Vision for the Future
Modi connected individual habits to national aspirations, stating that leadership begins with courage and initiative. He expressed optimism that students are embracing the vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047” – a developed India by 2047 – and that consistent, small habits are the building blocks of a thriving nation.
