London: A photo of a polar bear sleeping on a glacier has been chosen as the People’s Choice Wildlife Photo of the Year by London’s Natural History Museum. British photographer Nima Sarikhani won this picture.

A total of 50,000 people from around 95 countries participated in it. All of them had sent beautiful photos of wildlife habitats frozen in their cameras. From that the best 25 entries were selected. Nima’s picture of a polar bear sleeping on a glacier has been selected as the best picture.

“A polar bear has been taken north of Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. The bear carved a bed for himself in the small glacier before sleeping.

I spent three days searching for polar bears in thick fog. I decided to change the direction of the ship I was on. Accordingly I went to the place where there is more snow. There we saw both younger and older male polar bears. We waited for about eight hours. Then at midnight the young bear climbed onto the small glacier and, using its strong paws, carved out a bed for itself. It used nails. Then fell asleep. I took it as a picture,” said Nima.

Experts have opined that this film is meant to show the beauty and threat of nature at the same time. That is to say, the bond between the animal and its habitat and the environment the area is facing due to climate change is also said to be situated.

Polar Bear: Polar bears spend most of their time on icebergs floating in the Arctic Ocean. Because they depend on marine animals for food.

Polar bears have thick fur all over their bodies to withstand the cold. These look white but are not white in color. They are light-permeable colorless hairs. Light reflects off the fur and appears white.

Climate change is the biggest threat to the survival of polar bears. Due to global warming, sea ice around the world is melting. Polar bears are becoming extinct due to this. It is noteworthy that every year February 27th is observed as International Polar Bear Day worldwide to increase awareness about this and to control global warming and protect polar bears.
