Polestar’s third trick: SUV coupé Polestar 4 available from 61,900 euros

by time news

In China, production started and the first deliveries of the Polestar 4 took place at the end of 2023. The model is manufactured in Geely Holdings’ SEA factory in Hangzhou Bay. The first examples for the European markets will roll off the assembly line there from mid-2024. Deliveries here are scheduled to begin in August. Polestar is now making the start of orders for Europe official – and is also naming prices for the first time. The single-engine version of the Polestar 4 is offered in Germany for 61,900 euros and the two-engine version for 69,900 euros – each plus delivery fees.

The Polestar 4 is positioned as an SUV coupe – in both size and price – between the mid-size Polestar 2 sedan and the larger Polestar 3 SUV. The former is available in the German configurator from 46,275 euros, the latter costs at least 88,600 euros. Polestar emphasizes that the Polestar 4 is the brand’s fastest production vehicle to date, with a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

But first things first: The new SUV coupe is based on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), which has formed the basis for numerous electric vehicles in recent years. The Polestar 4 takes over the permanently excited synchronous motors from the platform. The single-engine Polestar 4 delivers a maximum of 200 kW on the rear axle with 343 Nm of torque and a maximum range of 610 kilometers according to WLTP (provisional information). For the all-wheel drive variant, the data sheet states a system output of 400 kW, a torque of 686 Nm and a range of (provisionally) up to 580 kilometers. The battery has an energy content of 100 kWh.

DC charging with 200 kW, AC charging with 22 kW

So far, so known. According to the current Polestar announcement, both variants can also be charged with up to 200 kW direct current and 22 kW alternating current. In addition, the hardware for bi-directional charging is said to already be installed, although “the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, which ensures that external devices can draw power from the Polestar 4, will be available at a later date,” as it says is called.

A heat pump is installed as standard in the Polestar 4, which uses the ambient heat to pre-condition the cabin and the battery. According to the manufacturer, a “semi-active suspension” is also active in the all-wheel drive vehicle, which is intended to ensure additional coordination between comfort and performance dynamics. A disconnect clutch also allows the all-wheel drive vehicle to disconnect the front electric motor when it is not needed to maximize range and efficiency. The wheels are between 20 and 22 inches depending on the configuration and are supplied by Pirelli and Michelin.

Basically, the Polestar 4 is in the D segment, so with its 4.84 meters long and 2.14 meters wide, the third in the group is not a small car. The height is 1.54 meters, the wheelbase is given as 2.999 meters, rounded to three meters. The vehicle was designed from the start as an SUV coupe and not derived from an SUV model. Therefore, according to the company, there should be no compromises when it comes to rear headroom – in fact, there are also adjustable seats in the rear.

One of the most striking features of the Polestar 4 body is the lack of a rear window – the Polestar 5 sedan will also do without a classic rear window. In this way, the standard glass roof extends to the rear over the heads of the rear passengers. Polestar CEO Ingenlath speaks of a “virtual rear window” and a “top-class digital rearview mirror”. Specifically, the rearview mirror is replaced with a screen that displays a real-time image from a roof-mounted rearview camera. However, the digital transmission can be deactivated so that the driver can see through the rear passengers, according to the manufacturer.

Polestar also attaches great importance to being a “design-driven brand” and demonstrates this in the new four-series. In addition to the missing rear window, the vehicle’s visual refinements include a special light signature to separate the double headlights, flush glazing with frameless windows, retractable door handles and an innovative selection of colors and materials, which include the new exterior colors Storm and Electron as well as the interior color fog .

According to Polestar, the generous interior proportions are particularly noticeable in the rear seats. A media and climate control screen intended for the second row is also intended to make the journey more attractive for passengers in the back seat. Basically, the Polestar 4 offers a 10.2-inch driver display at the front, a head-up display (HUD) and an infotainment system based on Google Android Automotive OS and the Snapdragon Cockpit platform. Can be operated at the front via a 15.4-inch screen in landscape format. New features and improvements are pushed remotely to all vehicles via regular over-the-air (OTA) updates. In terms of safety, the model has seven airbags. The safety driving assistants are supplied with information from twelve cameras, a radar and twelve ultrasonic sensors.

In addition to the standard equipment of the vehicle, Polestar offers additional equipment packages in the configurator, such as the Plus package with comfort and technology upgrades for an additional charge of 5,500 euros or the Pro package (2,000 euros) with 21-inch wheels and “subtle design details “. The Pilot package (1,500 euros) includes the so-called Pilot Assist and its extended functions and the Performance package (4,500 euros), which can only be selected in conjunction with the all-wheel drive, includes, among other things, 22-inch wheels and 4-piston Brembo brakes.

“The launch of Polestar 4 in all our markets during 2024 is key to our success as it adds a third model to our portfolio. Polestar 4 targets the premium performance D-SUV segment. “Its innovative interpretation of an SUV coupé offers great interior space and a breathtaking appearance,” sums up Thomas Ingenlath.

Polestar wants to score points worldwide with the SUV coupe. This is also supported by the fact that, as reported, the manufacturer wants to supplement the production of the model in China with contract production by Renault Korea Motors in South Korea from the second half of 2025 in order to serve the North American and South Korean markets.
