At the end of the General Audience this Wednesday, August 9, Pope Francis prayed for the victims of the natural disasters in Slovenia and Georgia.

The Holy Father regretted that in recent days there have been “dramatic natural phenomena in Slovenia and Georgia, which have caused death and material destruction.”

For this reason, he assured his prayers for the victims and expressed his spiritual closeness “to their families and to all those who suffer as a result of these catastrophes, while I thank those who have offered help, especially the volunteers.”

Since last August 6, Slovenia has suffered devastating floods due to heavy torrential rains that have left 6 dead and caused serious damage in the country.

Numerous areas have been isolated and close to 500 people have been evacuated due to this tragedy, described as the biggest natural catastrophe in the last three decades.

For its part, in northern Georgia there have been strong landslide avalanches of land that have killed at least 19 people.

Rescue teams continue to search for at least 16 people and 210 have been evacuated.
