Forget checking out a bestseller; this weekend, the Pondicherry media library in Port Louis, Morbihan, is offering something far more personal: a chance to “borrow a living book.” As part of Reading Night, the library will host a performance on Saturday, January 24, 2026, where attendees can listen to the life stories of seven local women. This isn’t about reading about life, it’s about experiencing it through the voices of those who’ve lived it.
“Like a Real-Life Novel”
the project was conceived by artist Blandine Clémot, an actress and author, following residencies in Karaikal and l’Éphémère. Clémot began to contemplate the stories each person carries within them. “Are we not, each and every one, truly living books, with numerous and varied chapters that connect us to each other? Do we not, among all of us, constitute a veritable living library?” she asks.
clémot invited residents of Port-Louis and the Left Bank to reflect on a pivotal event in their lives-a moment of joy, tragedy, or even seeming insignificance-that profoundly shaped their journey. A small group of seven women volunteered to share their experiences, offering attendees a chance to recognize and connect with their neighbors in a new light. “The restitution of a life experience, like a real-life novel,” Clémot explains.
The concept of “human books” isn’t new. It originated in 2000 in Denmark with an NGO dedicated to fighting discrimination and violence, aiming to challenge prejudices through personal connection. Libraries in cities like Rennes, Bordeaux, and Lyon have as adopted the practice, offering this unusual form of literary engagement.
The Pondicherry media library will transform into a mysterious and intimate space for the event. Attendees are asked to simply listen, refraining from interaction during the storytelling. Following the performances around 7:30 p.m., a convivial drink will be offered, encouraging discussion and reflection (participants are asked to bring a bowl and a spoon).
The event will take place on Saturday January 24, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pondicherry media library.Admission is free for teenagers and adults, with no reservation required. A seasonal soup will be served around 7:30 p.m.alongside the discussion.
