He electrical service was almost completely restored in Puerto Ricoafter a widespread blackout that affected the island since New Year’s Eve.
Around 1.44 million customersequivalent to about 98.3% of those affected, had electricity service again.
Preliminary investigations point to a fault in an underground cable as the cause of the power outage.
Early Tuesday, buildings went dark and traffic lights stopped working.

José Pérez, director of external affairs of LUMA Energysaid the failure “caused a cascade effect” that led to the general blackout.
But a few hours ago there was already electricity service at the two main airports in Saint John, as well as in drinking water facilities and at least 31 hospitals.
Pérez warned, however, that blackouts may still occur in some areas while power generation plants reach their optimal level.
The outage occurred during Puerto Rico’s peak tourism season and just hours before New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Under US control since 1898Puerto Rico faces constant infrastructure problems, aggravated by the devastating Hurricane Maria in 2017. The electrical grid has suffered frequent outages since the last hurricane.
