Ortiz’s journey from patient to artist demonstrates the transformative power of confronting adversity and finding beauty in unexpected places.
A Life-Altering Wave
In 2021, ortiz was traveling by boat from Cartagena, Colombia, to nearby islands when a sudden, powerful wave struck the vessel.Seated at the bow, he experienced a violent impact that fractured a vertebra, requiring immediate hospitalization and emergency surgery. “I’ve always been captivated by the power of water and the sense of freedom and escape one feels when diving into it,” Ortiz says, “but untill that point, I’d never considered the other side of this freedom and the risks it carries.” The accident served as a stark reminder of life’s fragility and sparked a profound shift in viewpoint.
from Recovery to Creation
Returning to his home in Barcelona, Ortiz found himself inspired to channel his recovery into a creative endeavor.”What happened sparked a newfound gratitude for life and for the resilience of the body,” he explains. Wiht the guidance of a coach, he began swimming as part of his rehabilitation, and felt a compelling urge to document this new world through his lens. This impulse ultimately led to the creation of The Swimmers.
The Swimmers is a photographic series and book that documents the dedication of athletes from two prominent Barcelona teams, Sabadell and Mediterranean. Ortiz intentionally gave the swimmers agency in thier poses, focusing on capturing their energy and confidence. He used both medium format film and his iPhone 16 Pro Max for the project, with one striking image featuring swimmers at a pool originally built for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The backdrop includes the city’s iconic cathedral and the modern Torre Glòries skyscraper.
