Time.news Editor (TNE): thank⁤ you for joining us, ‌Dr. Hartono.⁣ President‌ Prabowo⁢ Subianto recently addressed the National Police Headquarters, emphasizing the critical role of police in⁣ combating state⁤ financial leaks, smuggling, corruption, and drug trafficking. What‌ are your thoughts on this directive?

Dr. Maya ‍hartono ‌(DMH): Thank you for‍ having me. President Prabowo’s‍ message‍ is quite pertinent. The integrity of state finances is foundational ⁣too national stability and prosperity.‍ By‌ prioritizing the prevention of corruption and illicit activities, he underscores the police’s role as guardians of the nation’s future. This can strengthen public‍ trust in law enforcement.

TNE: The President highlighted that “there is no prosperity if we cannot⁣ be strong.” How do you interpret this statement in the context of national security?

DMH: It ⁤highlights a connection between security and economic viability. A robust police force ensures law‌ and order, wich is crucial for creating an environment where businesses and citizens can thrive. ⁣Without security, ⁤especially‌ in a diverse nation like ⁤Indonesia, economic progress can stagnate and ⁢will be‌ vulnerable ‌to external threats.

TNE: the recent‍ regional Police Headquarters Call⁣ had the‌ theme “The Precise⁤ Role ⁣of the Police in ⁣Supporting the 2024 National ⁤Agenda‌ to Achieve Internal Security.” Why is this theme significant?

DMH: This ‌theme is significant as it‍ aligns policing efforts with national objectives.‍ The police⁢ must ⁢not ‍only enforce laws⁤ but also actively contribute ‌to broader agendas like economic development ‍and social cohesion. Evaluating their duties, as emphasized ‍in this annual ‍meeting, allows for adaptability in strategies ‍to better serve the public and protect national interests.

TNE: ⁢President Prabowo also mentioned the need for “strong, militant,‌ professional police.” What skills or training ⁢do you believe the‌ police should focus on to ⁤meet these expectations?

DMH: Police training should⁤ encompass not only conventional law enforcement tactics⁣ but also community engagement and intelligence gathering. Skills in digital forensics are also increasingly important due to the rise of cybercrime. Continuous professional ⁣development will ensure thay stay current ‌with ‍emerging threats and technologies, ultimately‌ leading to⁤ a more adept force.

TNE: In your view, what practical steps can be taken by the police to combat the issues mentioned—leaks ⁣in state finances, corruption, and drug‌ trafficking?

DMH: Collaboration is key. Establishing inter-agency task forces can ⁢enhance resource sharing and intelligence.‌ Additionally, fostering community ⁢partnerships can lead ⁤to increased reporting of ⁤illicit activities. Clarity measures, such as public audits of police performance, can help‌ build trust ‍and accountability.

TNE: how can citizens contribute⁢ to the creation of a secure environment as discussed in the President’s ‍directive?

DMH: Citizens play a vital role. They‍ should feel empowered ‌to report suspicious ⁣activities and ‌engage in community policing initiatives. Education⁤ on legal rights‍ and responsibilities can also create a proactive rather than reactive culture around safety and ⁤security. A society that works with its police can achieve much more than one that remains disengaged.

TNE: Thank you, Dr. Hartono, for your insights on⁣ such a crucial topic. Your perspectives certainly⁢ highlight ⁤the importance of collaborative efforts between the police and citizens in ensuring national security.
