The president again referred to the complaint against Monsalve, a week after he resigned from the Government.
The president Gabriel Boric toughened the tone regarding the investigation for rape and sexual abuse against the former undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, and sent an emphatic message to victims of sexual crimes, in the midst of cases that have taken over the public agenda.
This in the context of the rape complaints against the former government authority and the former footballer. Jorge Valdivia, who since this Tuesday has been serving preventive detention in the Rancagua prison.
“I want to say, in particular, to the women of our country, that our commitment is to guarantee their right to live a life free of violence. And that when a woman reports something as serious as a rape, it is unimaginable what must have happened to make the decision to report, even more so against someone who has more power,” he began by saying.
In this sense, President Boric supported Manuel Monsalve’s complainant and maintained: “Our duty is to believe her. I believe him. And it is the duty of justice, without any pressure, to impartially determine the guilt or not of the accused.”
After that, he stressed that “No one is exempt from someone committing crimes, betraying trust, violating the law or right.“.
To which he added: “The question is how we react to that. And we have to react firmly, without privileges, without corporate defenses“.
In closing, the president assured that his focus is on the “fight against crime in all its forms: against violence against women, against drug trafficking, against organized crime, against collar and tie crime“.
