Officials and staff at the Russian embassy in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, have reportedly begun to leave.

Russia has deployed about 1.5 million troops along the Ukrainian border in protest of Ukraine’s joining NATO. The United States and European countries have warned that Russia could infiltrate Ukraine at any time.

Russia yesterday recognized the Dunets and Lugans regions, which are controlled by Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine, as separate cities. President Putin ordered the deployment of troops in those cities, and Russia stationed its forces in those areas. This was condemned by the nations of the world.

Russia has been pushing for the expulsion of its embassy officials from Ukraine due to the threat of war.

World leaders have warned that sanctions will be imposed on Russia over the issue. Accordingly, several countries, including the United States, announced sanctions on Russia yesterday. At a press conference at the White House, US President Joe Biden announced that sanctions would be imposed on Russia.

It is noteworthy that this is the first time that the US has imposed sanctions on Russia over Ukraine.

Similarly, Japan, Australia and Canada have announced severe sanctions on Russian companies, banks and individuals.
