In a rare political statement, British heir to the throne Prince William has called for an end to the fighting in the Gaza Strip. “I remain deeply concerned about the terrible human cost that the conflict has caused in the Middle East since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7,” said the son of King Charles III. according to a statement from Kensington Palace.
“Too many have been killed. Like so many others, I want the fighting to end as quickly as possible.” Due to its strict neutrality, the Royal Family generally holds back from making statements on current political issues.
“I refuse to give up this hope”
William plans to attend several events related to the Middle East conflict this week, Kensington Palace previously announced. The 41-year-old shared photos of himself at the Red Cross in Great Britain on Instagram. He wrote that he visited the organization to “understand how it provides important humanitarian assistance to those affected by the conflict.”
“There is an urgent need for increased humanitarian support for Gaza,” emphasized Prince William in his previous statement. “It is vital that help arrives and the hostages are released.”
It is only because of the sheer extent of human suffering that it becomes clear how important lasting peace is. “Even in the darkest hour, we must not give in to the advice of despair. I continue to hold onto the hope that a better future can be found and I refuse to give up that hope,” said the heir to the throne.
Dates as a symbolic sign
As British media report, the Prince of Wales has also planned a meeting in a synagogue where he wants to meet with young people who are fighting against hatred and anti-Semitism. The dates are intended to send a symbolic signal and draw attention to the suffering of those affected by the violence.
Exchange between religions and the fight against religious intolerance are a particular concern of King Charles III. The monarch has not made any public appearances since being diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of the month. His son is currently supposed to take on such symbolic and sensitive appointments.
Prince William himself withdrew for a short time in mid-January after his wife Kate had abdominal surgery. The heir to the throne has recently taken up official duties again. Princess Kate will probably only return to the public in a few weeks.
