The headlines surrounding Marius Borg Høiby don’t stop. Since Monday evening is Mette-Marit’s son in police custody. He was not alone when he was arrested.
The son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested on suspicion of rape. Marius Borg Høiby is suspected of violating a criminal law section “concerning sexual intercourse with a person who is unconscious or otherwise unable to defend themselves,” the police said on Tuesday. It is not known who this person is.
The 27-year-old was arrested on Monday evening. Marius Borg Høiby was not alone in the car when he was arrested. His ex-girlfriend was with him. The ex he got physical with in the summer. The son of the Norwegian Crown Princess was arrested for the first time three months ago in Oslo for alleged bodily harm and property damage in the apartment of his then girlfriend. He confessed to physically attacking the woman ”under the influence of alcohol and cocaine” and destroying things in her apartment. Since then, other women have made allegations of domestic violence against the 27-year-old.
The Crown Princess’ son had publicly acknowledged his mistakes. “Something happened that should never have happened. I committed bodily harm and destroyed objects in an apartment while I was high on alcohol and cocaine after an argument,” Norwegian broadcaster NRK quoted him as saying in August.
By the end of October, there was no sign of this remorse. A photo that went viral a few weeks ago shows Marius Borg Høiby holding a pack of beer in one hand and extending his middle finger with the other hand – in the direction of a magazine on whose cover he is featured. You can look at the picture again here.
Marius Borg Høiby comes from Mette-Marit’s relationship with Morten Borg. But he grew up in the royal family with his half-siblings, the 20-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra and the 18-year-old Prince Sverre Magnus. He withdrew from the royal family a few years ago.
What are the potential legal defenses that Marius Borg Høiby could use in his case?

Time.news Editor: Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us today. We’re discussing a developing story that has grabbed headlines worldwide—the arrest of Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit. To provide insight into this matter, we have legal expert Dr. Ingrid Hansen with us. Welcome, Dr. Hansen!
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Time.news Editor: Let’s dive right in. Can you summarize the charges against Marius Borg Høiby for our readers?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: Certainly. Marius is facing serious allegations of rape. Specifically, he is suspected of violating a law that addresses sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or otherwise unable to defend themselves. This law aims to protect individuals who may not be in a position to give consent.
Time.news Editor: That’s heavy. The details around the incident are sparse. All we know is that he was arrested on suspicion and that he was in a car with his ex-girlfriend at the time. How does the presence of another person play into the legal proceedings?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: The presence of the ex-girlfriend could be significant in several ways. First, she may be called upon as a witness, and her account of the events will likely be crucial for the investigation. Additionally, her relationship with Marius could also be examined to determine any motives or contextual factors relevant to the allegations. However, we must remember that at this point, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence.
Time.news Editor: Indeed, due process is fundamental. In terms of the legal ramifications, what could Marius face if found guilty of these charges?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: If convicted, he could face serious penalties, which may include lengthy imprisonment, as rape is considered a serious crime in Norway. The exact sentence would depend on various factors, including the specifics of the crime, any prior criminal record, and the legal arguments presented during the trial.
Time.news Editor: Marius is in the public eye due to his royal connections. How do you think his status will impact the case, both in the courtroom and in public perception?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: His royal status will undoubtedly influence public perception. People may have preconceived notions based on his lineage, which can complicate matters. In terms of the courtroom, however, the legal process is designed to be impartial. The court’s job is to focus on the evidence and the law, regardless of the defendant’s background. That said, media coverage can add pressure to both the prosecution and defense.
Time.news Editor: Speaking of media coverage, how do you see the public’s role in shaping narratives surrounding cases like this?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: Public opinion can wield significant influence, particularly in high-profile cases. The media can shape perceptions by the way they frame the story. It’s crucial for the media to remain responsible in reporting facts and ensure they don’t compromise the integrity of the investigative and judicial processes. Misinformation can lead to public outrage or support that isn’t based on the facts as they emerge.
Time.news Editor: All very insightful points, Dr. Hansen. As we follow this story, what should our readers keep in mind regarding the legal process ahead of us?
Dr. Ingrid Hansen: Readers should remain patient and understand that investigations take time. Each piece of evidence will be carefully analyzed, and due process must unfold. It is also essential to remember that until there is a conviction, Marius is presumed innocent.
