A pro-Palestinian protest took place on Capitol Hill, as demonstrators occupied the Cannon Rotunda and large crowds gathered around the Capitol complex. The protest, organized by the group Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), aimed to call for a ceasefire and challenge the Israeli government’s treatment of Palestinians.

However, U.S. Capitol Police reiterated that demonstrations are not allowed inside Congressional buildings and worked for hours to clear the crowd. Despite their efforts, protesters continued to sing and chant slogans such as “ceasefire now” and “free Palestine.” Approximately 100 people have been arrested so far, with three individuals charged with assaulting a police officer during processing.

The detained protesters were lined up outside the Cannon House Office Building and subsequently transported to a temporary holding area within the Capitol complex. Capitol Police have stated that demonstrators inside the Cannon Rotunda will face charges of illegally protesting inside a House Office Building.

Amidst the protest, the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) have temporarily enforced road closures for safety purposes due to the increasing number of protesters gathering around the House side of the Capitol Complex.

The protest started at the National Mall and eventually made its way to the Cannon building, located adjacent to the Capitol Building. Despite the overnight placement of fencing around parts of the U.S. Capitol, the demonstrators managed to enter the Cannon building in the mid-afternoon.

JVP claimed on social media that approximately 10,000 people were present outside the Capitol, with 500 managing to enter the rotunda. Their main objectives were to demand a ceasefire and condemn the Israeli government’s alleged ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

President Joe Biden, who is currently in Israel for a series of meetings with regional leaders, recently announced $100 million for humanitarian assistance in Gaza and the West Bank. While pledging continued support for Israel, Biden also expressed support for Palestinians unaffiliated with Hamas and emphasized the importance of a two-state solution.

The ongoing war between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hamas has sparked several protests in the D.C. area. Over the weekend, thousands of pro-Palestinian activists marched through the capital, advocating for a ceasefire. On Monday, more than 30 protestors were arrested in front of the White House.

Democratic lawmakers, including Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Nydia Velazquez, signed onto a resolution urging the Biden administration to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire.

As the protest continues and tensions remain high, lawmakers and demonstrators alike hope for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
