Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel next week to China, where the Third New Silk Roads Forum will take place on the 17th and 18th, as reported today by the advisor for International Affairs to the Russian Presidency, Yuri Ushakov.
Ushakov told the media that Putin’s visit is planned “for the next week”after being in Kyrgyzstan tomorrow and Friday, in what represents the first trip abroad since the beginning of 2023 and since the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him last March.
On September 20, the head of the Kremlin accepted China’s invitation to participate in the forumon the margins of which a meeting between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping is also planned.
The Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, stated that Putin plans to hold talks “substantial” with Xi.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, in turn, said at the beginning of the month that the agenda of Putin’s visit to the Asian neighbor includes the discussion of issues that are already clear and that “They are quite voluminous“, such as bilateral trade, economic cooperation and the global and regional situation.
In February 2022, shortly before the beginning of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine, Putin and Xi proclaimed in Beijing the “friendship without limits” among their nations.
In March of this year, during Xi’s visit to Russia, the Chinese leader tried to convince Putin of his 12-point peace initiative and, according to the Financial Times, warned his Russian counterpart against the use of nuclear weapons.
The New Silk Roads Forum will commemorate ten years since the launch of the “Belt and Road Initiative”as it is called in English, China’s flagship multilateral program to strengthen its international influence through cooperation and infrastructure projects in other countries.
