Foreign Minister Jaishankar has taken a more nuanced / different stance on Russia-Ukraine and Myanmar than the US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blingen, the Australian Foreign Minister Maris Payne and the Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Quad Meeting: Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar has sent a clear signal to Beijing that we are pursuing a shared vision to maintain a rule-based international order. The quad meeting was held in Melbourne, Australia on Friday. Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar met with the Foreign Ministers of the United States, Japan and Australia to discuss various diplomatic issues.

After the meeting, Foreign Minister Jaishankar took a more nuanced / different stance on Russia-Ukraine and Myanmar than the position of US Secretary of State Anthony J. Blingen, Australian Foreign Minister Maris Payne and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi.

Pointing out the challenge of the insurgency on the Indo-Myanmar border, Jaishankar quoted the Colonel and his family who were killed in the insurgency by the protesters. However, he noted that India was opposed to sanctions imposed on other countries at the national level. It is noteworthy, however, that the United States has imposed sanctions on Myanmar Janta leaders.

Jaishankar remained silent on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Signs of Russian expansion, including new troops coming to the Ukrainian border, are beginning to emerge. Blingen said the two countries are currently in a position where the invasion could begin at any time.

The Australian Foreign Minister said he was concerned about the concentration of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border, adding that his country would extend full support to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Japanese Foreign Minister said that Japan would continue to support “sovereignty and regional unity” and that Ukraine would be discussed at the Quartet meeting.

When asked by Jaishankar about the recent meeting between the Russian and Chinese Presidents, I would like to say that our fellow leaders have been paying constant attention to this. He also said that we are not against any country. The joint statement issued at the conference of foreign leaders did not mention the Ukraine issue.

But there was talk of a Myanmar affair. We are concerned about the situation in Myanmar. We call for an end to the violence there. We also call for the release of all detainees. We reaffirm our support for ASEAN’s efforts to find a solution in Myanmar and call on the military to urgently implement ASEAN’s five – point consensus and return Myanmar to the path of democracy as soon as possible. “We urge the international community to work together to end the violence,” the statement said.

Speaking on Myanmar after the meeting, Blinken noted that the situation there is of concern to all of us.

Responding to a question, Jaishankar said, “We all agree on the importance of democratic change in Myanmar. It makes us all sad that the country is clearly moving in a different direction. We strongly support the ASEAN position on Myanmar and their efforts to engage in negotiations.

This makes us even more concerned as it is a country that shares borders with India. Concerns about insurgents who killed a senior army officer and his family a few months ago; Concerns about Govt; Concerns about lack of adequate vaccination; He noted that concerns such as the humanitarian situation caused by food shortages are guiding our thinking.

He said that we do not follow the policy of imposing sanctions at the national level where we have such concerns. This clearly shows that the United States does not support the embargo imposed on Myanmar.

Hayashi said the leaders of the four countries, including Narendra Modi, would hold a consultative meeting in Japan in the first half of this year.

He said that as democracies, we would continue to express our vision of establishing an international order based on the rules, with respect for integrity and sovereignty, respect for the rule of law, transparency, the right to travel in international waters and peaceful resolution of all disputes.

Terrorism was also mentioned in the joint statement of the Quad leaders. We condemn the use of terrorist proxies for cross-border terrorism and urge the nations of the world to work together to eradicate terrorist havens, as well as the destruction of terrorist networks and the infrastructure and financial means that support them, and the cessation of terrorist cross-border movement. It called on all countries to ensure that the area under their control is not used for terrorist attacks and to bring the perpetrators of such attacks to justice as soon as possible.

The statement added that we condemn the terrorist attacks in India, including the 26/11 Mumbai and Pathankot attacks. UNSC Resolution 2593 (2021) reaffirmed that Afghan territory should not be used for threatening or attacking any country or shelter in the Indo-Pacific region, for training terrorists, or for planning or financing terrorist activities.

As the third year of the corona epidemic draws to a close, the Quad countries have issued a total of 500 million vaccines. We are already committed to providing 1.3 billion vaccines worldwide. “We are pleased to announce the significant progress made by the Quad countries in expanding our Biological E Limited Vaccine Manufacturing Center in India, which aims to supply at least 1 billion vaccines by the end of 2022,” it said.
