Southern Illinois Salukis Defeat Murray State Racers 27-7 on Homecoming
Despite a strong defensive effort from key players, the Murray State Racers suffered a 27-7 defeat at the hands of the No. 16 ranked Southern Illinois Salukis on homecoming day at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Kentucky. The loss drops the Racers to 0-9 overall and 0-5 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, as they prepare to travel to Cedar Falls next week for a matchup against Northern Iowa.
Racers Struggle to Convert Opportunities
The Racers demonstrated the ability to move the ball against the Salukis, but crucial opportunities slipped away. A fourth-down and one attempt stalled with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter, and an interception in the red zone three minutes into the second quarter hampered their offensive momentum. Despite these setbacks, Murray State remained competitive early in the game.
Halftime Respite, But Salukis Pull Away
Trailing 17-0, the Racers found the endzone with just 27 seconds left in the first half. A 5-yard pass from Ogle to JK Carter narrowed the deficit to 17-7 at the halftime intermission. However, the Salukis responded in the third quarter, extending their lead to 27-7 with 12 minutes remaining, ultimately sealing the Racers’ fate.
Northington Leads Rushing Attack, Rowsey Dominates on Defense
Despite the loss, individual performances shone for Murray State. Jawaun Northington led the Racers’ rushing attack with 16 carries for 81 yards, including a season-long 34-yard run with 4:47 left in the third quarter. This surpassed the previous season-best of 24 yards, achieved twice by Tyrell Campbell and Jordan Washington. Northington now boasts 407 rushing yards this season and 1,615 yards throughout his MSU career, with 12 touchdowns.
On the defensive side, Dylan Rowsey was a force, recording 15 tackles – his seventh game this season with 10 or more tackles. Rowsey currently leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference with 111 total tackles and an average of 12.33 per game, holding an 11-tackle lead over Indiana State’s Kimal Clark. He is within striking distance of entering the MSU single-season top-10, needing just 133 tackles to join MSU Hall of Famer Nathan Williams, who holds the record with 179 tackles in 2008.
Challenging Schedule and Honoring a Legend
The Racers have faced a particularly challenging stretch, having played five consecutive weeks against FCS Top-25 teams. Opponents included No. 21 South Dakota, No. 10 Illinois State, No. 2 South Dakota State, and No. 22 Youngstown State.
Homecoming day also served as an opportunity to honor Murray State legend Danny Lee Johnson, whose No. 26 jersey was retired. Johnson, the 1978 OVC Player of the Year and an All-America selection, remains MSU’s second all-time leading rusher with 2,522 yards.
