The Minister of Culture, candidate for mayor of Paris in 2026, announced the creation of a committee to better protect the banks of the Seine. The municipality denounces “political exploitation”.
In January, having just been appointed Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati was clear: she will run for mayor of Paris. From there to accusing him in advance of having mobilized the resources of his ministry to throw quilts at his socialist rival Anne hidalgo in the playground, there is only one step. which we will not cross. Because Rachida Dati seems to have thought about it herself, with joy, on Wednesday 27 November. At the same time as the mayor of Paris announced that she would not stand for a third term in the March 2026 municipal elections, the Minister of Culture was fast to announce on platform “committee” responsible for strengthening the protection of the heritage of the banks of the Seine in the capital.
A heritage whose protection Rachida Dati has repeatedly criticized, in her opinion, is incomplete, thus fueling the now famous #SaccageParigi against the municipal team in office. The area concerned was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and includes, among others, the Louvre and the Tuileries, half of the Champs-Elysées, the Madeleine church, the Esplanade des Invalides, the entire Champ-de -Mars, or 10 of the 20 neighborhoods of Paris. “Now any demolition, damage or alteration of this exceptional heritage will be impractical. For the first time, Paris’ heritage will be protected. wrote the minister, without specifying whether the giga-pubs covering thes buildings, for example, which are always highly contested even if the law authorizes them, constitute in her opinion a “alteration” or less assets.
The proclamation of this committee comes a few days after Rachida Dati’s request to classify the Marie Curie laboratory while the municipality and the regional directorate of cultural affairs (Drac) have just ratified the building permit which provides for the encapsulation of the nearby pavilion of Sources in a new building. It also follows the surprise presentation of an amendment aimed at enhancing the heritage “the priority of this government”, with a budget extension of 300 million euros. Meanwhile, the Senate Culture Committee, for its part, raised the alarm at the beginning of november on the worrying state of the “creation” sector of the ministry, while the sector coudl suffer the full brunt of the historic budget cuts by the municipalities.
