This rare phenomenon is the result of an atmospheric phenomenon known as a circumzenithal arc. Unlike rainbows, which are created by the refraction of light in raindrops, circumzenithal arcs are formed when sunlight is reflected by ice crystals from high-altitude cirrus clouds.
Sunlight is bent into a spectrum of colors, appearing as a bright, colorful arc in the sky. The occurrence of this optical miracle is associated with the presence of air masses.
