Some Reddit communities have decided stop a strike against paid access to the API, as the management of the social network threatened to replace the teams of subreddit moderators if they refused to resume work. Earlier, the head of Reddit, Steve Huffman, said that the company was not going to follow the protesters and cancel the introduction of a paid API.

On June 12, Reddit users went on strike against the introduction of paid access to the API and made access to their subreddits private for 48 hours. More than 6.5 thousand communities took part in the strike, including r/funny (more than 40 million subscribers), r/Music, r/Aww, r/Pics and r/science (each with over 30 million subscribers). After this had no effect on the leadership of the social network, some communities decided to keep them private until they were heard. On 18 June on strike participate almost 4.1 thousand subreddits.

Reddit announced the introduction of paid access to the API in April 2023. As stated in the social network, exceptions will be made only for non-profit projects and developers that simplify Reddit services (such as content moderation bots, for example). The price will depend on the number of requests to the API – 1 thousand pieces will cost about $0.24. Reddit community moderators opposed this initiative, as they also use the API due to the lack of tools built into Reddit itself.
