BOLZANO. The president of the Province of Bolzano Arno Kompatscher announced that the Meloni government intends to change the approach to the reform of the autonomy statutes. The Government’s new strategy plans to introduce a separate constitutional bill for each region with special status, rather than a single proposal for all regions.
The information, communicated by Kompatscher today during a dedicated video conference with the presidents of the Regions and Provinces with special status, was transmitted to the president of the Province of Bolzano the previous day by the Minister for Regional Affairs Roberto Calderoli.
“It is understandable that this decision does not arouse great enthusiasm in the existing working group,” explained President Kompatscher after the meeting.
The president of the autonomous Province of Bolzano underlined that towards Alto Adige “there is an internationally guaranteed commitment, reiterated in the government declaration of the Meloni executive and in the government program adopted at local level”.
“It is necessary to keep the promise made in the government declaration of restore autonomy and take the necessary steps in a timely manner,” President Kompatscher said.
The matter will be discussed next Wednesday during a meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
President Kompatscher also sees an opportunity in this development: “If our statute of autonomy will be the exclusive subject of negotiations, there will no longer be a reason to negotiate only the general part. We will also be able to negotiate the special part: it is therefore important that the reform begin this year.”
