Stiko has a new chairman. The Dresden pediatrician and infectiologist was also a member of the federal government’s Corona Expert Council.
The Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko), which is responsible for vaccination recommendations in Germany, has a new chairman. The pediatrician and infectiologist Reinhard Berner was elected as the new chairman on Monday, Stiko announced.
Berner is also director of the clinic and polyclinic for pediatric and adolescent medicine at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital of the Technical University of Dresden. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), his work focuses on viral and bacterial infections in children, antibiotic therapy and resistance and the prevention of autoimmune diseases.
Among other things, Berner was a member of the Federal Government’s Corona Expert Council from 2021 to 2023 and has been a member of the Expert Advisory Board for Pandemic Respiratory Infections at the RKI since 2021. The professor of pediatric and adolescent medicine is also a member of the Commission for Drugs for Children and Adolescents at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).
According to the information, the previous chairman Klaus Überla resigned from his membership in the Stiko and from the chairmanship of the commission for personal and professional reasons. Marianne Röbl-Mathieu remains deputy chairwoman.
