On stage at the Paris Motor Show this Tuesday 15 October, Luca de Meo recommended that European manufacturers “start a dialogue with China“.
“Europeans must establish a dialogue with China and connect with the Chinese ecosystem, to make the best of it, in a spirit of “coopetition””a combination that combines cooperation and competition, launched this Tuesday by Renault boss Luca de Meo on the stage of the Automobile Summit, organized in Paris on the occasion of the opening of the 90th Paris Motor Show. “Our sector has never needed so much openness and team spirit (…). This is an opportunity that we cannot miss, we must learn from our experiences and imitate them when they are better than us”underlined the man who is also president of Acea, the European automotive lobby. “This is what Europeans like Fiat or Citroën did a century ago in the United States, when Ford revolutionized the industry with the assembly line. This is what the Chinese also did more recently with us.Luca de Meo recalled.
BYD and Xiaomi as an example
In recent years, China has become the largest automotive market in the world and its manufacturers dominate electric cars, which will very quickly replace combustion engines, with technological innovations, production capabilities and more efficient organization. Luca de Meo cited the example of Chinese leader BYD, which has regained control over most of the parts necessary for the manufacture of a car, which had long been entrusted to equipment manufacturers, while Xiaomi excels in connecting its cars with the driver’s smartphone.
Although it withdrew from the Chinese market, Renault launched the Horse joint venture with auto giant Geely to produce and sell engines for combustion and hybrid cars. Geely is also helping Renault design its future small electric Twingo. Luca de Meo once again criticized a Europe that “accumulates fines and deadlines”particularly on CO2 emissions, while the United States “they massively stimulate their industry and the Chinese organize it to balance the game, with immense needs”. Most European car manufacturers, including Renault, have asked the European Commission to do so “urgent relief measures” to cope with the tightening in 2025 of CO2 emissions standards that they believe they are unable to meet, particularly due to the erosion of electric car sales.
