Following Hollywood’s return to work and the delays caused by strikes, the 2024 Golden Globes saw a number of actors and writers discussing their reentry into the industry with USA TODAY’s Ralphie Aversa.

This past week, esteemed actors and industry professionals gathered at the 14th Governors Awards to honor a new class of award recipients. Angela Bassett, Carol Littleton, Mel Brooks, and Michelle Satter each took to the stage to accept their significant achievements in the film industry.

The star-studded event featured talent such as Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Christopher Nolan, Paul Giamatti, Margot Robbie, and Bradley Cooper – all eagerly anticipating the upcoming 96th Academy Awards.

At the event, Mel Brooks humorously promised not to sell the honorary Oscar, stating, “I swear to God.” The 97-year-old director reflected on the impact of the award and was joined at the ceremony by his son, Max Brooks.

Regina King praised actress Angela Bassett’s storied career, suggesting that she is “ageless.” Bassett delivered an inspirational speech, paying homage to Black actresses and expressing her lifelong contributions to the industry.

Film editor Carol Littleton, the late wife of former Academy president John Bailey, expressed gratitude for her sole Oscar nomination and spoke on behalf of all editors who work tirelessly in the industry.

In a deeply emotional moment, Michelle Satter dedicated her humanitarian award to her late son, Michael Latt, who was tragically murdered in November. Ryan Coogler and Chloé Zhao praised Satter’s influence on their careers and acknowledged the impact of her son’s tragic passing.

The event was a poignant reflection of the resilience and passion that drives Hollywood forward, following the challenges of industry strikes and the personal losses experienced by those in the film community.
