A source in the rocket and space industry told RIA Novosti that the launch of the second Arktika-M satellite into orbit, which is necessary for monitoring the Northern Sea Route, will take place on December 16 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It was previously announced that the device was delivered from NPO Lavochkin to Khimki near Moscow to Baikonur on November 14 and the launch is scheduled for December.

The Arktika-M satellites will operate in a highly elliptical orbit, which will allow them to explore the Arctic region and provide round-the-clock monitoring of the Earth’s surface, clouds and seas in the Arctic. It is planned that the number of devices in the system will be increased to four, which will allow monitoring the Arctic every 15 minutes and receiving up to two million images per year. It is also expected that by 2031 two more satellites will appear in the system.

In addition, in 2026, the design of a new generation of Arktika-MP devices will begin, which will have a larger number of spectral channels and will be able to provide information about the high-latitude Arctic regions of the planet
